The quiet of a mountain cabin before anyone else is awake. The stillness of a Japanese retreat, where a room holds almost nothing and somehow feels complete.

Those feelings are not made of destinations. They’re made of light, texture, weight and restraint — and every one of them can be rebuilt in a rented flat, a townhouse, a small bedroom with one good window.
